We’ve all heard the stories and legends of those that were the chosen ones. They were instilled at birth or by another with special virtues and skills that set them apart from everyone else. Everything comes naturally to them. They require no effort to accomplish great tasks. They feel no fear but may doubt their abilities. They have intellect and wisdom far above our own. They may not have acquired greatness yet but it’s just a matter of time until they do.

I met my wife in the summer of 1984. I had returned home from my sophomore year at college and was working to earn enough money to enroll for the fall semester at Boise State University. In movies and television today it’s popular and okay to be mediocre and average. There are many shows that portray people living with dead end jobs, messed up family lives, and even addictions. In watching these shows you get the idea that this is the way life is supposed to be so just settle in. The characters have lost all hope of a better life and have become sarcastic about it. As the Intentions was evolving as a band, a very magical traveler showed up at a jam session in upcountry Maui. His Chicago Soul roots resonated with my own Midwest Blues history, and we bonded deeply, first over the music, and secondly because we were probably the only two people on the entire island that knew what “shake and bake” meant! Madi is a brilliant soul singer, yet he also has a native touch with Reggae, Ska, Dance-Hall and dub.
